For those of you that would like to come out and sail together, club practices will be on Sundays from 4:30-5:30pm, June 3rd- September 30th.  This will be for juniors aged 8-17 years old that have previously taken summer sail camp and are interested in strengthening sailing skills and having fun sailing with others. Parents will be expected to stay and help.  I am looking for a lead parent to help supervise these practices.  If you are interested or willing, please let me know.

We have many juniors that are ready for our local regattas.  This Saturday is the 2nd race in the Spring Dinghy series, and Castleberry is only 2 weeks away!!  If your junior is interested, please let me know so I can help them reserve a boat. We still have some JYs, BICs, and Sunfish available for the series. Race committee will definitely need help, so please consider volunteering.  Email Michael Carstensen,, if you’re available. Let’s get as many juniors out there as possible!!

Dennis Brown, will be offering a 2-day power boat safety course for those 13 years and older on May 20th, 2-5pm and June 2nd, 10a-1pm.  The course is $10/ person or $15/ family and will be held up at the clubhouse. In order to operate at motorized boat in Georgia, all those born after January 1, 1998 must pass an approved boater education course. Please email Dennis to register at  Make sure to include the names and ages of all that plan to attend, as well as your contact information.

Please let me know if you have any questions.  Looking forward to seeing lots of juniors on the water.

Report on Youth Planning session Apr. 22, 2018

Thank you to all the amazing volunteers that worked so hard on the Junior Night.  Even with the rain we still had a pretty good turn out.  There were 76 people there, including several new members and guests.   With 9 boats on the water, there was plenty of opportunity for kids and families to try sailing.  My favorite part was watching as 7 of our Juniors spent the afternoon sailing kids on 420s and Sunfish.  For those of you that were unable to make it, I have attached some junior program information, as well as the racing team application.  Those interested in the racing team must return the application to me by April 30th.   Also, we’d love to see more kids racing in the dinghy series.  Next race is on May 12th.  Please let me know if you have any questions. We look forward to seeing you all at the next Junior event.

Junior Sailing

2017 was a great year for our Juniors!  Thanks to the addition of 4 new O’pen BICs to the program, kids have been excited about getting on the water.  We had more than 20 kids from the ages of 7-17 participating in weekly practices.  While juniors increasingly raced locally, seven of them also traveled and participated in the SAYRA Junior Grand Prix.  We are very excited about getting more kids involved and want to continue to strengthen the junior program.  Several of you have kids/ grandkids that we would love to see out there.  This is a really great opportunity, as well as a wonderful community of kids.  If you are interested, please reply so we can get you added to the junior email list.

We have big plans for 2018, including the addition of four 420’s, an ASC Junior team, and an advanced sailing camp over the summer.  As the program grows, we will need continued support and help from the club.  On March 15th, at 6:30 pm, we will have a junior planning meeting at the clubhouse.  If you would like to help or discuss plans for the junior program, we look forward to seeing you there.

What an amazing regatta!  Thank you to all of the families that helped. We are so proud and excited to have had 12 of our juniors participating. Thank you also to Eli Putnam, Dan Bagnoni, and Marcus Moehlman who have been working with our juniors and helping to improve their sailing skills.

Next up is the Midlands Regatta, a SAYRA Junior Grand Prix Event, in Columbia, SC on November 4th and 5th.  This is a great opportunity for us to represent the Augusta Sailing Club.  We will be traveling as a team and need at least 5 juniors to commit to racing BICs.  I need to know ASAP who will be able to go.  Attached is information about camping and hotels. Keep in mind this is only an hour and a half away.  If you know for sure that you are going, please let me know by today.  You can register at

We are also scheduled to go to the O’pen BIC Midwinter Championships in Charleston, SC on November 18th-19th.  This will be a combination of traditional and fun races.  It is going to be a blast!!! If you are interested, let me know so that we can reserve you a boat.  You can then register at  For those who are planning to go, I seriously recommend also registering for Midlands, as it will be great practice for this regatta.

If you have any questions or if your child needs a ride to either of the regattas, please let me know.

Otherwise, I hope to see you all this Sunday at 3pm for practice.

 Have a great week!

Junior Day on The Water

posted Aug 16, 2017, 2:13 PM by AUGUSTA SAILINGCLUB   [ updated Aug 16, 2017, 2:16 PM ]

What a great turn out this past weekend!  Hopefully, everyone enjoyed sailing the new BICs.  Make sure to mark your calendars, as we will be starting Sunday practices for all Juniors interested in improving their sailing skills on September 10th at 3pm.  Each week we will have a different topic, as well as some drills and fun games on the water.  All participants must bring a coast guard approved life jacket and have a parent on the premises.  If there are any parents willing to volunteer, please email me.

We are also hoping to get several Juniors to race in the upcoming Labor Day Regatta on September 2nd and 3rd. For more information and to register go to labordayregattaandpigroast-1.  If we have enough participants, we will try to have a separate Junior course for the Sunfish and O’pen BICs.  In order to prepare, there will be a special practice for all Junior Labor Day participants on Sunday, August 27 at 3pm.  We will go over racing rules and have some practice races, as well as answer any questions.  Please let me know as soon as possible if you are interested in racing the Labor Day Regatta, so we can make arrangements for boats and courses.

We look forward to seeing you on water!

Junior Sailing Program kicking off. We introduced several kids to sailing and looking forward to two new member families. Some want to sail Spring series and Castleberry. Next junior get together is May 30. Contact George Bowen or Eli Putnam.     Dan Fodera

Juniors...this Saturday, May 13th is the second race of the dinghy series. We would love to see as many of you out there as possible. There are several Sunfish that you can use. Just let us know if you need one, and we will help get it rigged. My kids had never raced before and enjoyed themselves at the last one. It's a great, fun opportunity to practice sailing. If you have any questions, please contact me. I'd be happy to explain the registration process. Hope to see you there!!          Kim Bagnoni

Members the juniors need your help! We want to create a list of members who are willing to provide mentoring to juniors. This would include taking them sailing or providing instruction to those interested in racing. Please respond if you are interested in working with our juniors.      Eli Putnam828-384-8072eli
