Nancy Varn Obituary
NORTH AUGUSTA, S.C. - Memorial Services for Mrs. Nancy Kinder Varn, 76,
who entered into rest April 21, 2016, will be conducted Sunday afternoon at 3
o'clock from Grace United Methodist Church. Rev. James D. Dennis, Jr.
officiating. Nancy was a native of Kingstree, South Carolina, having made North
Augusta her home for the past 39 years. In her childhood home of Kingstree, at
the age of 15, she met her future husband David. She was a graduate of the
University of South Carolina and received a Master's Degree from Converse
College in Gifted and Talented Education. Nancy taught in the SOAR program
(also known as Gifted and Talented Education) in Aiken County for 31 years and
was honored as Teacher of the Year. She was known for her dedication to her
students and their pursuit of learning. Nancy was an avid gardener, reader and
collector of local art who had a special love of animals. She was an active
volunteer with the Living History Park Garden and projects at the North Augusta
Arts and Heritage Center. Nancy was preceded in death by a son-in-law, Jim Tar.
Survivors include her husband of 54 years, David Wilson Varn, Sr.; a son, David
Wilson (Lisa) Varn, Jr., Marietta, GA; two daughters, Catherine Varn (Eric)
Alexander, North Augusta, SC; Kristin Varn Tar, Augusta, GA; a brother, Harvey
J. Kinder, Aiken, SC; three grandchildren, Addison Virginia Alexander, Kinder
Payton Alexander and Till Varn Alexander; two beloved dogs, Scout and Kneesaa
and a cat, Boiteau. The family will receive friends at the funeral home this
Saturday afternoon from 4 until 6. Memorials may be made to Friends of Augusta
