Junior Program

Thank you all that made it to the Junior Planning Meeting on Monday night.  For those of you who could not make it, here is a recap:

This past year, junior participation in local regattas has more than doubled.  We have several kids interested in traveling and several ready to start learning how to race, but we also have many kids who just want to sail for fun or not even at all.  Our goal is to appeal to all of them and make ASC a place where all our juniors enjoy being. At the meeting, we decided that the key is making it fun for all the kids at the club no matter what their sailing interest is.

Much of our discussion revolved around adding in more social events.  The plan is to continue some of the events that we have done in the past such as the Junior Night, beach cookouts, fall campout, and the Easter Egg hunt, as well as add in another spring and fall event.  Suggestions included a race/ picnic at another island, a lock in, a glow in the dark party, a day of big boat sailing, games and activities after Wednesday Night Racing, beach parties, etc. However, I need lots of help with these Junior Social Events.  I’m looking for at least a few people that would be willing to head up and plan an event or two, as well as volunteers to help run the events.  If this sounds like an area you’d be interested in helping, please let me know.

As for sail camp, we will be advertising at this weekend’s Columbia County Christmas parade.  We really would like a great turn out of juniors and members to come walk with the ASC float on December 2nd. We plan to meet at Evans Town Center Park at 1 pm.  Make sure to wear your ASC clothing.  For those of you that cannot make it, we will have extra fliers that you can share.  Please let me know if you are willing to pass some out.

At the meeting we also discussed plans for continuing the Junior Sailing Team and the Sunday Club Sailing.  However, we have decided to divide it into two seasons, spring and fall, with the summer focused on sail camp and Wednesday Fun Nights.  We would like to continue the volunteer coaching and add in a couple clinics for the more experienced sailors.  We believe that the base of the program still needs to be volunteerism, as well as parental involvement. With that being said, we would love to have some more members sharing their knowledge at Sunday practices, or helping with coach boats, or even just keeping an eye on the kids at the beach.

Now that we have more kids racing locally, it has been suggested that we have separate junior courses for Castleberry, Labor Day, and Halloween Regatta.  In order to do this, we will need more parents helping on race committee.  If you have a junior sailor, we encourage you to volunteer on race committee during winter or spring series so that you will be able to assist with the junior courses later in the year.

We will be offering a CPR course in February and a US Sailing Instructor Level 1 course in the spring.  If interested, please let me know.  I will send out more details as dates are finalized.   Also keep an eye out for a boat safety course that we will be offering this year.

We have lots of things planned for this year and look forward to more members getting involved with the Junior Program.  If you are interested in any of the following volunteer opportunities, please let me know.

 Junior Social Event Coordinators

Assistant coaches

Fundraising events

Shirt designers

Wednesday Night Fun activities

Big Boat Sailing

Summer Camp volunteers

Halloween Regatta Junior activities

We appreciate all the help and support.  Looking forward to another wonderful year.

Thank you to all the amazing volunteers that worked so hard on the Junior Night.  Even with the rain we still had a pretty good turn out.  There were 76 people there, including several new members and guests.   With 9 boats on the water, there was plenty of opportunity for kids and families to try sailing.  My favorite part was watching as 7 of our Juniors spent the afternoon sailing kids on 420s and Sunfish.  For those of you that were unable to make it, I have attached some junior program information, as well as the racing team application.  Those interested in the racing team must return the application to me by April 30th.   Also, we’d love to see more kids racing in the dinghy series.  Next race is on May 12th.  Please let me know if you have any questions. We look forward to seeing you all at the next Junior event.

Junior Sailing

2017 was a great year for our Juniors!  Thanks to the addition of 4 new O’pen BICs to the program, kids have been excited about getting on the water.  We had more than 20 kids from the ages of 7-17 participating in weekly practices.  While juniors increasingly raced locally, seven of them also traveled and participated in the SAYRA Junior Grand Prix.  We are very excited about getting more kids involved and want to continue to strengthen the junior program.  Several of you have kids/ grandkids that we would love to see out there.  This is a really great opportunity, as well as a wonderful community of kids.  If you are interested, please reply so we can get you added to the junior email list.

We have big plans for 2018, including the addition of four 420’s, an ASC Junior team, and an advanced sailing camp over the summer.  As the program grows, we will need continued support and help from the club.  On March 15th, at 6:30 pm, we will have a junior planning meeting at the clubhouse.  If you would like to help or discuss plans for the junior program, we look forward to seeing you there.

What an amazing regatta!  Thank you to all of the families that helped. We are so proud and excited to have had 12 of our juniors participating. Thank you also to Eli Putnam, Dan Bagnoni, and Marcus Moehlman who have been working with our juniors and helping to improve their sailing skills.

Next up is the Midlands Regatta, a SAYRA Junior Grand Prix Event, in Columbia, SC on November 4th and 5th.  This is a great opportunity for us to represent the Augusta Sailing Club.  We will be traveling as a team and need at least 5 juniors to commit to racing BICs.  I need to know ASAP who will be able to go.  Attached is information about camping and hotels. Keep in mind this is only an hour and a half away.  If you know for sure that you are going, please let me know by today.  You can register at https://www.regattanetwork.com/clubmgmt/applet_registration_form.php?regatta_id=15496

We are also scheduled to go to the O’pen BIC Midwinter Championships in Charleston, SC on November 18th-19th.  This will be a combination of traditional and fun races.  It is going to be a blast!!! If you are interested, let me know so that we can reserve you a boat.  You can then register at  https://www.regattanetwork.com/clubmgmt/applet_registration_form.php?regatta_id=15527  For those who are planning to go, I seriously recommend also registering for Midlands, as it will be great practice for this regatta.

If you have any questions or if your child needs a ride to either of the regattas, please let me know.

Otherwise, I hope to see you all this Sunday at 3pm for practice.

 Have a great week!

Junior Day on The Water

posted Aug 16, 2017, 2:13 PM by AUGUSTA SAILINGCLUB   [ updated Aug 16, 2017, 2:16 PM by kim bagnoni ]

What a great turn out this past weekend!  Hopefully, everyone enjoyed sailing the new BICs.  Make sure to mark your calendars, as we will be starting Sunday practices for all Juniors interested in improving their sailing skills on September 10th at 3pm.  Each week we will have a different topic, as well as some drills and fun games on the water.  All participants must bring a coast guard approved life jacket and have a parent on the premises.  If there are any parents willing to volunteer, please email me.

We are also hoping to get several Juniors to race in the upcoming Labor Day Regatta on September 2nd and 3rd. For more information and to register go to labordayregattaandpigroast-1.  If we have enough participants, we will try to have a separate Junior course for the Sunfish and O’pen BICs.  In order to prepare, there will be a special practice for all Junior Labor Day participants on Sunday, August 27 at 3pm.  We will go over racing rules and have some practice races, as well as answer any questions.  Please let me know as soon as possible if you are interested in racing the Labor Day Regatta, so we can make arrangements for boats and courses.

We look forward to seeing you on water!

Junior Sailing Program kicking off. We introduced several kids to sailing and looking forward to two new member families. Some want to sail Spring series and Castleberry. Next junior get together is May 30. Contact George Bowen or Eli Putnam.     Dan Fodera

Juniors...this Saturday, May 13th is the second race of the dinghy series. We would love to see as many of you out there as possible. There are several Sunfish that you can use. Just let us know if you need one, and we will help get it rigged. My kids had never raced before and enjoyed themselves at the last one. It's a great, fun opportunity to practice sailing. If you have any questions, please contact me. I'd be happy to explain the registration process. Hope to see you there!!          Kim Bagnoni

Members the juniors need your help! We want to create a list of members who are willing to provide mentoring to juniors. This would include taking them sailing or providing instruction to those interested in racing. Please respond if you are interested in working with our juniors.      Eli Putnam828-384-8072eli      Putnam@Yahoo.com
